Community Energy in Action: DECA's Summer Training Inspires Citizens in Maribor

Earlier this month, an international group of change-makers gathered in Maribor, Slovenia, for the two-day Summer Training Course: Advancing Community Energy, marking a step forward for citizen-led energy initiatives in the Danube region.

The free, in-person training brought together practitioners, representatives from development agencies, energy agencies, the ministry, and engaged citizens—all interested in a goal to transform our energy systems to more fair and sustainable ones, from the ground up.

Hosted by Korimako in collaboration with E-zavod, the event offered an engaging introduction to the growing movement for community-owned, locally controlled energy. From solar cooperatives and shared electric vehicles to neighbourhood retrofitting and local heating networks, participants explored hands-on ways to build fairer, greener energy systems.

The course made it clear: we shouldn't wait for big players to deliver the energy transition for us. We can start on our streets, buildings, and villages right now.

Through interactive sessions, practical examples, and collaborative design activities, attendees gained insight into:

• The principles and potential of community energy;

• Technical solutions like rooftop solar, EV charging, and energy efficiency;

• Social entrepreneurship and leadership for local action;

• And how to design their own community energy projects.

What made this training special was its accessible and inclusive approach. No prior technical background was required—only curiosity, commitment, and a desire to make a difference.

Korimako, in collaboration with other partners, plans to host more trainings in the coming months, so if you’re ready to spark change in your own community, now’s the time to get involved.
