Meet our pilots - Nyíregyháza, Hungary
The Municipality of Nyíregyháza with County Rights has been participating since early 2024 in the CityWalk 2.0
project, supported by the Interreg Danube Region program. The project aims to reduce energy use in urban
transport and promote sustainable, active mobility.
The campaign will take place in September 2025. This one-month pilot campaign encourages students and
employees to choose cycling for their daily commute as much as possible.
While the previous CityWalk project mainly focused on creating pedestrian-friendly urban design methods,
CityWalk 2.0 aims not only to redesign transport conditions (street re-design) but also to change the mindset of
city residents.
Bike2Work & Bike2School Pilot Campaign – Cycling Challenge
The Bike2Work & Bike2School pilot campaign runs from September 1 to 30, 2025. During this one-month
program, we encourage employees and students to cycle to work or high school instead of driving. Employers
and high schools compete citywide to become the most committed cycling company or school. Schools
promote active mobility among their students, while companies use the campaign as a good marketing and
team-building opportunity.
The pilot tests:
• How open are city employers, schools, employees, and students to participating in the Bike2Work &
Bike2School program?
• To what extent can car use be reduced through this program?
Existing cycling initiatives will also be turned into a city-wide movement. The overall goal is to increase the
number of cycling trips (counting occasions, not kilometers), especially encouraging employees and high
school students who usually drive to switch to cycling more often.
Primary target groups:
• Employees of participating large companies and the municipality who registered for the Bike2Work
challenge.
• High school students from participating schools who registered for the Bike2School challenge.
Bike Breakfast – September 13, 2025, Tirpák Festival, 8:00 AM
Location: Kossuth Square, Continent Restaurant terrace
Program: Press conference with project team members, school and company ambassadors, and students.
At the “Bike Breakfast” event, representatives of schools and companies involved as cycling ambassadors will
discuss the campaign, its results, and further suggestions.
Companies and schools had until September 5 to join the pilot campaign to find out who the most committed
cycling employer and school are. The Strava app helps measure commitment by tracking cycling occasions and
kilometers. The company and school with the most cycling occasions will receive a traveling trophy, and the
winning school will also get a community experience day.

Closing Event and Award Ceremony – October 4, 2025, Bike City Event
Location: During the Bike City event
Program: Announcement of winners and award presentation: Most committed cycling school trophy, most
committed cycling company trophy.
Winners of the online challenges “Bike Selfie” and “STRAVA Heart” will also be awarded.
Social Media Challenges:
1. “Bike Selfie” Challenge – Show us where and how you cycle!
Duration: September 1 – September 30, 2025
Participation:
• Share your selfie publicly with the designated hashtags and tag the official city page.
• The photo must include the bike and the participant.
Selection and awards:
• Submitted photos will be judged by the campaign organizers after September 30, 2025.
• Judging criteria: creativity, positive message, community spirit.
• Winners will be announced in the campaign’s closing post on October 5 and notified separately.
2. “STRAVA Heart” Challenge – Ride a heart for the city!
Create a route on STRAVA that forms a heart and show how you cycle with passion in Nyíregyháza.
Duration: September 1 – September 26, 2025
Public voting: September 27–30
Results announcement: October 5 in the campaign’s closing post
Participation:
• Open to individuals aged 14 and above. Participants under 18 need parental consent.
• Share your selfie publicly with the designated hashtags and tag the official city page.
• The photo must include the bike and the participant.
Selection and awards:
• Photos will be judged by the campaign organizers between September 27–30, 2025.
• Judging criteria: creativity, positive message, community spirit.
• Winners will be announced in the campaign’s closing post on October 5 and notified separately
