Inland waterway transport still has unexploited capacities compared to other transport modes – in Europe and even more so in the Danube region – due to various challenges, such as navigational bottlenecks, a partly outdated inland fleet and a shortage of qualified personnel. These macro-regional challenges require the mobilization of resources and close coordination of activities among all Danube region countries. This project is therefore aimed at establishing a stable and effective governance system for PA1a, aiming to increase the share of environmentally friendly inland waterway transport in the total transport of freight across the Danube region, in accordance with the EUSDR Action Plan. PA1a will focus on the implementation of individual work programmes for each of the six PA1a working groups, aligned with the six thematic actions of the EUSDR Action Plan. The core achievements of this project will include: 1. An effective governance structure within PA1a, in particular with regard to the intensive involvement of the PA1a Steering Group members in the implementation of the EUSDR Action Plan; 2. The support to policy development and policy initiatives in the field of inland navigation; 3. Enhanced coordination between core stakeholders, both within PA1a (in particular the six thematic PA1a Working Groups) and with further stakeholders from the EUSDR (other PAs/DSP), EU institutions and further stakeholders in and outside the Danube region; 4. The support to strategic projects, project development and capitalisation of project outcomes.
