Brown bear fitted with a telemetry collar in Paklenica National Park
ForestConnect project partner from Montenegro, CZIP, had the great pleasure of being part of the team that participated in the capture of a brown bear (Ursus arctos) in Paklenica National Park in Croatia on July.
This bear research project has been conducted for the sixth consecutive year by the Public Institution of Paklenica National Park in collaboration with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Zagreb. In record time, the bear was captured on the first night after the traps were set. After being tranquilized, it was fitted with a telemetry GPS/GSM collar.
This advanced technology allows us to track its movements daily, identify where it feeds, where its dens are, and determine the size of its territory over a longer period.
Telemetry marking of individuals is one method used to monitor bears and other large mammals, providing valuable data that contributes to the conservation and understanding of these magnificent animals.
The captured bear, a male weighing 172 kg, was named Bunovac after the location where it was caught. This is the fifth bear to be marked with a GPS/GSM telemetry collar in the Paklenica National Park area. Notably, this collar is also equipped with a video camera, and we hope to get quality footage from the bear’s perspective. This wonderful and very useful experience serves as preparation for similar activities in Montenegro.
