WWF Bulgaria - we are researching!
We recently talked about how important ecological corridors are for large carnivores and how our team has taken on their conservation and restoration. But before all this happens - we are researching.
HOW?
Experts are walking through certain sectors of the territory of the Northwestern Forest State Enterprise in search of data on the presence of large carnivores.
This is done by registering traces of footprints, markings, excrement, traces of feeding, and more.
However, finding traces is not easy at all. Most often, the territory being studied is divided into squares measuring 10 km by 10 km. In each of these squares, a route (transect) with an average length of 10 km is determined, which the experts explore.
So far, we have come across traces of wolves, as well as other mammals such as roe deer, deer, and wild boars. By the way, snow and wet ground help a lot to register their presence.
Together with the Northwestern Forest State Enterprise, we also installed 5 cameras that help us monitor life in the ecological corridors and confirm the so-called "critical connectivity sectors" for large predators, which we have previously identified using various data and modeling technologies.
