Devastating fire on Stara planina day 11th
Started from the lightening, as heard in mass media, major and devastating fire in Stara planina is not extinguished yet. On the eleventh day 5000 hectares are on fire and it is impossible to predict how many animal and herbal species are endangered.
Stara planina is located in eastern Serbia, on the border with Bulgaria, and is part of the huge Balkan massif. Together with the Bulgarian part of this mountain, it forms an inseparable unity in the ecological sense and thus is part of the ForestConnect project and interest aria for mosaic habitats introduction. It is extremely rich in both plant and animal species. In this area, it is our priority to support the following wild species: wolf, bear, fox, roe deer, fallow deer and wild boar.
Given the circumstances, restoration of this area as a corridor for large animals and in climate resilience sense, has an additional importance. Devastating fires have become usual condition and with this one in progress, we still cannot see the consequences. In addition to destroying plant life, fires also destroy animal habitats and move their corridors closer to populated areas in search of food and habitat, where conflicts inevitably occur.
