Youth Mental Health Lab#1 - Serbia
Organised by Know How Centre, Novi Sad, 13. 12. 2024On December 13, 2024, the first Lab workshop of the MEET project took place at the Know How Centre in Novi Sad, bringing together a diverse group: university students, Roma community representatives, local authorities, and mental health practitioners. Their shared mission was to address the pressing challenges of youth mental health.
The day began with a warm welcome, as participants were introduced to the MEET project’s aims and the specific objectives of the Lab workshops. One of the highlights of the morning was the unveiling of the "Catalogue of Good Practices." The catalogue showcased impactful initiatives like The Healthy BoXXX, GoBIG & GoBIG 2.0, and Self♀Value+. It ignited thought-provoking discussions, especially among the students, who saw these practices as vital tools to tackle mental health issues in Serbia.
The group pointed out into several key issues, from reproductive health and early marriages to self-image, societal pressures, and more complex mental health struggles such as stress and anxiety. The concept of health literacy, particularly the Austrian approach, resonated deeply with the attendees, sparking ideas on how similar strategies could be applied in Serbia. A shared understanding emerged: there was a need for more tailored, culturally relevant resources for Roma youth.
In the afternoon, the conversation turned to solutions. Participants brainstormed ways to engage Roma youth, emphasizing the importance of fieldwork in informal settlements, school collaborations, and partnerships with the Office for Roma Inclusion. They also discussed using social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, podcasts and Instagram to reach younger audiences. Peer education, where students would take the lead in workshops, became a key recommendation.
The workshop concluded with a focus on sustainability and actionable steps, with participants stressing the importance of involving local authorities to ensure lasting change. It was clear: this workshop had planted the seeds for future collaborations and a stronger, more inclusive approach to youth mental health.
