World Environment Day (WED)

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

The theme for 2024, "Our Land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration" emphasizes the importance of restoring land, combating desertification, and enhancing resilience to drought (UNEP).

Human-caused environmental damage is escalating, with serious consequences such as climate change, loss of ecosystems, land desertification, and increased concentrations of microplastics in water. It is our duty as the current generation to protect the environment and return nature, soil and water to their natural state.

We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water springs, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land!

World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Over the past five decades, the Day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach (UNEP). Tens of millions of people participate online and through in-person activities, events and actions around the world.

The world produces more than 430 million tonnes of plastic annually, two-thirds of which are short-lived products that soon become waste, filling the ocean and, often, working their way into the human food chain (OECD).

In 2024, the Republic of Korea will host the Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. The negotiations aim to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, as mandated by United Nations Environment Assembly resolution 5/14.

Ridding the planet of plastic pollution is an important contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including those on climate action, sustainable production and consumption, protection of seas and oceans and repairing ecosystems and retaining biodiversity. The Republic of Korea will host World Environment Day 2025 with a focus on ending plastic pollution globally. Considering MicroDrink's main objective is tackling with lack of integrated MP management in water environment and that expected results will strengthen policy & decision makers’ knowledge & ensur their collaboration with practitioners & scientific community we hope that next year WED will be celebrated with much bigger ambitions.
