A PlaceCRAFT series introducing the five pilot regions and the activities taking place within them.

Across the Danube Region, PlaceCRAFT works with five pilot communities, each shaped by its own history, culture and challenges. In this series, we take a closer look at these places: their landscapes, communities and heritage, and the range of activities, from workshops to cultural and touristic initiatives, being carried out to support their revitalization.

Belo Blato Microregion - Serbia

About the Region

Belo Blato is a microregion of six villages set in a lowland Banat landscape of wetlands, fishponds, floodplains and agricultural fields, with the Special Nature Reserve Carska Bara at its heart. The character of the area comes from the closeness of water and rural life: boat rides through reed-lined rivers, birdwatching, windsurfing, tree-lined roads and the easy rhythm of salaš (homestead) life.

The region is one of the most multicultural in Serbia, with Slovak, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Serbian and other communities shaping its architecture, food, music and village traditions over generations. That diversity is still part of everyday life today, visible in landmarks like Ečka Castle, traditional Banat food culture and local festivals such as Kobasicijada, where food, music and community come together.

Visitors can explore the area by boat or on foot through Carska Bara, try the Pannonian safari experience, or take slower bike rides through the surrounding landscapes. Worthwhile stops include the Etno Village in Belo Blato, Salaš Lujza and other traditional Banat food destinations, as well as Ečka Castle and its park. The best way to experience the microregion isn't to rush between landmarks, but to take it in as one immersive rural-wetland journey.

The Pilot Focus

The Belo Blato pilot connects six villages, each rich in local assets that haven't yet come together as a shared destination. Workshops and consultations held in late 2025 and early 2026 showed that the region isn't short on local value. The challenge is helping local actors see how everyday life, food, landscape and village spaces can matter both to the community and to visitors.

The next step is building a flexible outdoor community space in Belo Blato, hosting community dinners, workshops, green markets and small public events. This model is designed to be adapted across the other villages, connecting local actors, heritage and everyday rural life into one shared microregional experience.

The process brings together the six local communities, Serbian project partners, institutions, tourism and cultural organisations, and entrepreneurs, alongside people whose everyday work is tied to the land and its heritage. This participatory process includes not just institutions, but also the people who keep local life alive through events, food, hospitality and everyday knowledge.
