Back on Track Mentoring Programme for rural NEETs

The Back on Track project has designed a pioneering mentoring programme that equips youth workers with the skills and tools to guide young people back into education and employment.

Across Europe, thousands of young people living in rural areas face barriers to accessing education, training, or meaningful work. The Back on Track project is tackling this challenge head-on through a pioneering mentoring programme that equips youth workers with the skills and tools to guide and inspire these young people.

A 5-Step Model for Effective Youth Mentoring

Developed and piloted in Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the programme combines structured training, real-world experience, and cross-country collaboration. Its five key components offer a comprehensive model for mentoring youth back into education or employment.

1. Train the Mentor Curriculum

The foundation of the programme is a modular curriculum developed through needs assessments, expert input, and collaborative workshops. It prepares mentors to build trust, provide motivational support, promote digital inclusion, and guide career development. Each module blends theory with practical tools, including case studies, quizzes, and interactive activities.

2. Field Trips and Practical Workshops

Mentors visited caregiving and supporting facilities in their countries to learn more about the NEETs and their situation.

3. Capacity Building Pilot Action

Four to five mentors per country were selected to test the curriculum in action. Through virtual and in-person exchanges, they shared best practices, piloted tools and techniques, and built a transnational network of peer support.

4. Evaluation and Feedback

Data and feedback from mentors, youth participants, and stakeholders are being collected and analysed in a detailed evaluation report. The insights will inform curriculum updates and strengthen the overall approach.

5. Framework for Effective Mentor Training

Drawing from lessons learned in the field, the final Back on Track Mentor Training Framework will serve as a flexible model for mentoring NEET youth across Europe. It includes guidance for practical implementation, fieldwork planning, and long-term sustainability.

Looking Ahead

The final version of the Mentor Training Framework will be published in mid-2026 and shared through interactive dissemination events across Europe. By investing in the people who support young people, Back on Track is building a future where no one is left behind, regardless of geography or background.
