Capacity Building Academy XIV

Urban Kult uses culture as a transformative tool to activate communities, strengthen local identity and co-create sustainable socio-economic models through participatory and interdisciplinary approaches. Its work is rooted in local contexts but designed to generate transferable models applicable at regional and transnational levels. The organisation is motivated by the belief that culture can be a platform for community transformation and a practical tool for social cohesion, local identity building and sustainable development.

During the Capacity Building Academy, Urban Kult presented its work with local stakeholders and the development of the L.A.Z.A.R. methodology. This methodology was created through workshops as a practical framework for community activation. It guides local actors from recognising their local values to transforming them into authentic tourism experiences and measurable results, while supporting the connection between local culture, community engagement and tourism development.

The approach responds to a clear need identified among stakeholders. Hosts are aware of their value but often lack the structure to communicate it. There is a shift from accommodation to experience, where the focus moves towards creating meaningful stays for visitors. As expressed during the process, there is a need for a clearer strategy for guests, with the aim of encouraging them to return and to attract those who appreciate culture, heritage and the spirit of the destination.

Partnerships are essential in this process, bringing together cultural practitioners, local authorities and community groups to ensure that different perspectives are included. This collaborative approach supports both implementation and long-term sustainability.

Following the presentation, participants discussed the challenges of maintaining momentum after initial project phases, focusing on how to secure ongoing support, strengthen community engagement and ensure that initiatives remain relevant over time.
