KOTIVIZIG and LIMNOS Explore Decentralised Wastewater Solutions in the Municipality of Ormož
8 May 2026 – Ormož, Slovenia
As part of the D-CLEAN project's ongoing work on knowledge transfer for the operation and management of decentralised rural wastewater treatment systems, representatives of KOTIVIZIG (Hungary) and LIMNOS (Slovenia) met in Slovenia for a technical visit to a series of decentralised wastewater treatment systems across the Municipality of Ormož.
The visit gave the Hungarian partners a first-hand look at five different treatment facilities, each illustrating a distinct technological approach to decentralised wastewater management.
A Tour Through Five Treatment Technologies
The day began in the Municipality of Središče ob Dravi, where the group visited a municipal wastewater treatment plant based on suspended activated sludge with SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) technology. This was followed by a stop in the Municipality of Ormož, where participants examined a different biological treatment approach using PVA gel carriers.
The visit then continued with three constructed wetland systems, all operated by Komunala Ormož:
Cvetkovci constructed wetland (700 PE)
Sveti Tomaž II constructed wetland (500 PE)
Ivanjkovci constructed wetland (350 PE)
Constructed Wetlands: A Sustainable Solution for Rural Areas
The constructed wetland systems drew particular attention during the visit. They were highlighted as highly efficient, low-maintenance, and cost-effective wastewater treatment solutions, combining reliable pollutant removal performance with strong adaptability to climate variability — qualities that make them especially well suited to the long-term sustainability needs of small and rural communities.
By comparing activated sludge, PVA gel carrier, and constructed wetland technologies side by side, the visit offered valuable insight into how different decentralised solutions can be matched to the specific needs, scale, and conditions of individual communities.
Strengthening Cross-Border Knowledge Transfer
This technical exchange between KOTIVIZIG and LIMNOS reflects the core aim of the D-CLEAN project: transferring practical knowledge and operational experience on decentralised rural wastewater treatment between partner regions. Seeing these systems in operation, and discussing their design, maintenance, and performance directly with the operators of Komunala Ormož, provides partners with practical insights that will support the development of decentralised solutions in their own regions.
