Danube GeoHeCo Regional Educational Workshop in Slovakia
On 16 June 2026, the Slovak Center for Scientific and Technical Information (CVTI SR), in cooperation with the associated partner the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical University of Košice (TUKE) successfully organised the final Danube GeoHeCo regional educational workshop in Košice
The event was organised as a practically focused workshop on capacity building and was intended for relevant groups of stakeholders - especially market actors on the supply and demand sides. The workshop was attended by representatives of the academic, private and public sectors.
The regional education workshop in Slovakia was implemented within the framework of activity 3.4, which envisages regional on-site training workshops focused on knowledge transfer, capacity building of stakeholders and establishing contacts in the market in the field of shallow geothermal energy and hybrid heating and cooling systems.
As part of the agenda, representative of CVTI SR has presented the Danube GeoHeCo project, its objectives, activities and professional outputs. This was followed by a presentation of the Danube GeoHeCo project digital platform. The associate partner of the project (TUKE) has presented the IT tool Danube GeoHeCo. The output from testing the IT tool was presented on the example of geothermal data from EcoPoint Košice. The tool developed within the Danube GeoHeCo project was used to evaluate the potential of a shallow geothermal system and support decision-making based on data on sustainable heating and cooling solutions.

As part of the theoretical part of the workshop, representative of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava has online presentation on the topic of deep vs. shallow geothermal energy and their potential. In the presentation was explained why the topic is important, clarified the difference between shallow and deep geothermal energy and indicated their potential.
The discussion at the end of the event brought an important perspective of the workshop participants on the researched issue of shallow geothermal energy in the Košice region.
The programme concluded with a study visit to the Laboratory of Excellent Research of the Department of Technical Building Equipment of Technical University of Košice. The laboratory serves for testing, simulations and research. Then visit continued in the Center for Research on the Efficiency of Integration of Combined Systems of Renewable Energy Sources (VUKONZE). The research center at TUKE focuses on testing, development and demonstration of modern ecological technologies.
With this project event in Slovakia, the educational workshop celebrated the achievements of Danube GeoHeCo while reinforcing the partnerships and knowledge that will continue to support the wider deployment of renewable heating and cooling solutions across the Danube Region.
The education workshop was held within the framework of the Danube GeoHeCo project (Danube Region Program 2021-2027), which aims to increase the penetration of shallow geothermal energy in the Danube region.
