First SCOM of the IBC project in Vulkanland
Partner Meeting in Vulkanland
The IBC project aims to enhance the natural and cultural assets of disadvantaged border areas through the transnational development of cycle routes, focusing on the involvement of local vulnerable groups. The IBC pilot projects and solutions for managing inclusive routes and targeting the silver-age demographic, supported by transnational marketing and promotion activities, will create an accessible, socially inclusive cycle route network with European acceptance.
The IBC project study tour took place in Feldbach, Austria, on June 4-5, along the Vulkanland Route 66. During the tour, partners learned about the region's history and development, including how the "Steirisches Vulkanland" brand transformed a previously disadvantaged border area into a culinary hotspot in Central Europe. In 1999, the Association for the Promotion of the Styrian Vulkanland was founded, officially establishing the name "Vulkanland." The goal was to unify and showcase the region's activities through the regional brand "Steirisches Vulkanland."
The IBC project partners visited Feldbach’s stunning landmark, the world's most colorful church tower, and explored the Town Hall before embarking on the study tour.
The first stop was LAVA BRÄU, a brand known for its exclusive beers and exceptional whiskies. After a tour of the brewery, participants had the opportunity to sample its beverages. At the next venue, Vulcano Ursprung, visitors heard about the determined journey of three Vulcano farmers who, over 20 years, have been producing some of Europe’s finest air-dried raw ham. A tasting session followed.
The tour continued with a visit to the "Cheesemaker" – Fromagerie zu Riegersburg. Cheesemaker Bernhard Gruber combines unique seasonal creations using a variety of regional ingredients, adapting to the high season and the animals’ biological rhythms. Visitors were treated to the distinct flavors of his cheeses through a guided tasting.
At Josef Zotter's chocolate factory, visitors followed the "glass path of joy," observing the journey of cocoa beans from the roasting process to the finished chocolate. During the factory tour, guests could enjoy a continuous tasting of Zotter’s ingredients and products.
The final stop of the tour highlighted beverages again, with a visit to Ruotkers – House of Whiskey, Gin & Rum. David Gölles revitalized a former restaurant in Riegersburg, transforming it into an exclusive destination with breathtaking views of Riegersburg Castle. At Ruotkers, visitors were offered a behind-the-scenes look at the production and storage of whiskey, gin, and rum.
The study tour concluded with a discussion on participants' experiences and the project’s future direction.
