"Discover and Taste Krk" - schoolchildren explore local flavors and traditions

As part of the SReST project, students from the Malinska-Dubašnica elementary school participated in creative workshops on the importance of local products for our environment, community, and health, getting to know the local flavors and traditions of the island Krk.

In order to introduce the concept of slow food to our elementary school students, or to convey to them the importance of local products for our environment, community, and health, project partner Municipal Community Dubašnica designed a series of creative activities that encourage critical thinking, active participation, and experiential learning.

The workshop “Meet and Taste Krk” enabled children from Dubašnica to become better acquainted with the authentic gastronomy of Krk through a combination of games, practical tasks, and tasting local foods.

The students:

– Learned how to differentiate between the concepts of slow food and fast food, and local and imported foods,

– Discussed the process of growing food – researched seasonality, origin and production methods,

– Designed slow food menus – created menus in their imagined restaurants using only local ingredients,

– Participated in practical planting of plants ("broskva" - a kind of local kale variety)

– Participated in tasting local foods – explored them through smell, taste and touch.

Such activities are crucial in developing children's awareness of themselves, their environment and their community. Preserving our natural and cultural heritage is the key to a bright future, and children are the most important bearers of this important task.
