Exploring the future of women's employment in peripheral industrial regions: Insights from the RSA 2024 conference
The collaborators of the WIN project - Improving Women's Employment in Peripheral Industrial Regions, Jani Kozina, Katarina Polajnar Horvat, David Bole, Marko Senčar Mrdaković and Maruša Goluža from ZRC SAZU, and Jasmin Sandriester and Jörn Harfst from the University of Graz, actively participated in the conference of the Regional Studies Association (RSA) "Central and Eastern Europe: Dynamically Changing Regions in an Ever-Changing World", which took place from 11th till 13th of September 2024 at the University of Dubrovnik. The conference organised a special session dedicated to exploring the future of work in the industrial peripheries of Central and Eastern Europe, entitled "Local labour markets between deindustrialisation and reindustrialisation?".
In this session, Jani Kozina presented a paper entitled "Women in the labour markets of peripheral industrial regions: statistical evidence from CEE". His paper highlighted key statistics on the situation of women in local labour markets in these regions, focusing on the challenges and opportunities they face in the era of deindustrialisation and reindustrialisation. Katarina Polajnar Horvat also presented an important paper entitled "The Legacy of Women's Factories in Trbovlje: Lessons Learned for a Just Transition", in which she analysed the impact of the historic women's factories in Trbovlje on the contemporary challenges of just transition in industrial regions. Jasmin Sandriester presented a paper entitled "It's a man's world?! Female Employment in the Industrial Peripheries of CEE". Their contributions opened an important debate on the role of women in changing industrial environments and highlighted the importance of equality and just transition for the future of work in these regions. The RSA 2024 conference thus provided an excellent opportunity to share knowledge and experiences and to discuss key issues affecting local labour markets in the industrial peripheries of Central and Eastern Europe.
