Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute (UHMI)

The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute (UHMI) is a leading national institution committed to advancing hydrometeorology and climate science in Ukraine. Functioning under the joint authority of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, UHMI plays a crucial role in monitoring environmental systems and supporting resilience to climate-related risks.

UHMI investigates the atmospheric and hydrological processes, with emphasis on climate variability, long-term trends, and climatic conditions. UHMI develops methods, maps, online platforms, applications, and recommendations to protect the population and the economy from the effects of floods, droughts, forest fires, climate change, air and water pollution and other dangerous phenomena. In addition, UHMI develops forecasting methods and maintains structured climate data repositories that ensure the integrity and accessibility of long-term environmental records. These activities support evidence-based decision-making across sectors such as energy, agriculture, water management, and infrastructure, and contribute to both national policy development and international climate analysis efforts.

UHMI contributes to scientific and strategic initiatives through research collaboration, technical expertise, and stakeholder engagement. Its activities strengthen Ukraine’s capacity to assess climate risks, develop adaptation strategies, and integrate climate intelligence into sustainable development planning. As a project partner, UHMI actively engages in all core objectives of the Danube-ADAPT project, ensuring its contributions are embedded across climate risk assessment, adaptation measures, and capacity-building efforts.
