The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ)

The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMÚ) is a specialized organization providing hydrological and meteorological services at both national and international levels. Currently, the SHMÚ is an organization under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Environment of the Slovak Republic.

The SHMÚ monitors quantitative and qualitative parameters of air and water in the territory of the Slovak Republic, determines, verifies, evaluates, archives and interprets information on the state and regime of air and water, describes events in the atmosphere and hydrosphere, creates and issues meteorological and hydrological forecasts, warnings and information, including floods and climate change impacts (including adaptation and mitigation measures). SHMU has a long-track record of leading and participating in major national and international research projects. SHMU plays an important role in supporting policy making, strategy formulation and standardisation activities, mainly in the process of implementating EU Directives and regulations. It provides data, information and results of studies to users and the public.
