During the project partners' meeting under the Danube GeoHeCo project in Nagyatád, Hungary, on October 30, 2024, a study tour was held to showcase a best practice example of a geothermal heating system in the city.

In the winter heating season of 2022, a geothermal heating system was launched in Nagyatád that utilizes waste heat from a thermal well located in the city center. The system provides heating for a total of seven public buildings in the city using renewable geothermal energy.

As part of the project, a network of pipelines was established to connect the public buildings to a thermal energy storage facility located near the thermal well. In each building, heat is extracted by heat pumps that use energy from the thermal water, while solar panels on the rooftops of the buildings provide electricity to power the pumps. The project demonstrates the optimal, cost-effective use of geothermal energy, promoting sustainability.

To raise awareness about energy efficiency, the system includes monitoring equipment that displays the reduction in fossil fuel consumption and the generation of renewable energy, encouraging energy-responsible behavior among employees. This system results in annual savings of 51 million HUF (2023) and a reduction in natural gas consumption by 82,800 m³, significantly contributing to environmental protection.

The project was funded through the Széchenyi 2020 program (TOP-3.2.2-15-SO1), initiated by local authorities and employees, in collaboration with energy experts.
