Preliminary Research Report Now Available

We are excited to share the preliminary results of our research on individual characteristics of remote workers, conducted as part of the Danube4Rural.com project (D.1.1.3).

🔍 What did we explore? Through a transnational online survey and 39 in-depth interviews across the Danube Region, we gathered insights from more than 500 participants on how remote work is being used, what motivates it, and what rural areas need to offer to attract remote workers and digital nomads.

🏡 Key findings on rural life Rural areas are valued for their access to nature, cleaner air, more peace and quiet, and larger living spaces — conditions that support family life and an improved quality of life. However, structural challenges remain: limited public transport, fewer job opportunities, and restricted access to services, cultural and leisure activities continue to affect the attractiveness of the countryside.

💡 The role of remote work Remote work enables people to save travel time, manage their schedules flexibly, and maintain career opportunities without living in big cities. For many respondents, it means a better work-life balance — particularly for those with caregiving responsibilities. Our research shows that remote work can be a powerful enabler for making rural life a realistic and attractive option.

📋 What does the report contain? The report presents findings structured around three policy packages — Quality of Life, Financial Incentives, and Regulatory Framework — and includes country-level results for all pilot areas across the Danube Region. It is further enriched by an extensive literature review and a collection of good practice examples from across Europe, providing inspiration and concrete starting points for pilot actions.

The research was carried out by L&R Social Research (Vienna) with the support of all project partners. It forms the evidence base for the next phase of the project: developing and testing governance model solutions in our pilot rural communities.
