Final Conference of the Project “DRWO 4.0”: Digital Transformation of the Wood Industry Held

The wood industry is one of the most promising sectors of the economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as highlighted at the final conference of the project “DRWO 4.0 – A Systemic Path to Industry 4.0.” Although traditional, this sector is increasingly relying on modern technologies and innovations, with significant potential for further development.

As emphasized by Prof. Dr. Darko Petković from the University of Zenica, digital transformation opens numerous opportunities not only for the wood industry but also for all related sectors. “I believe that in the future we will elevate this sector to an even higher level, although we are currently lagging behind in design solutions. We have bright examples of successful companies, but there is substantial room for improvement, particularly in workforce education,” Petković stated. According to data from the Chamber of Economy of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the wood industry comprises around 1,400 companies with approximately 30,000 employees and represents one of the few sectors that achieves a trade surplus. “With the implementation of new technologies and Industry 4.0 principles, this sector can significantly increase its competitiveness and sustainability.

Investment in education, equipment, and the improvement of business processes is key,” emphasized Almin Mališević, Director of the Industry Sector at the Chamber. The “DRWO 4.0” project, which lasted 27 months, was implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Development Agency PREDA from Prijedor, in cooperation with partners from the Danube region. Its key result is a developed transformation model intended for companies in the wood processing sector. “The model provides concrete steps for introducing digital solutions, improving business operations through LEAN methodology, and transitioning towards green and sustainable practices,” explained Project Manager Sanja Karanović.

During the conference, project results were presented along with modern approaches to digital transformation – from smart manufacturing and product development to the application of artificial intelligence and circular economy. Special focus was placed on practical examples and tools that contribute to strengthening the sector’s competitiveness. The conference brought together representatives of the wood industry, designers, managers, IT experts, the academic community, and institutions, providing an opportunity for knowledge exchange, networking, and gaining practical insights in the field of Industry 4.0. The conference is part of the project “Transformation Model of the Wood Industry towards Industry 4.0 – DRWO 4.0,” which is funded by the European Union through the Danube Transnational Programme.
