Study Visit Report – DRWO4.0 in Transylvania

The DRWO4.0 project successfully organized its international Study Visit in Transylvania, Romania between 2–6 September 2025. The event gathered experts, researchers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders from across the Danube Region to strengthen collaboration and explore opportunities for sustainable growth and digital transformation in the wood and design industries.

Over three days, participants engaged in a diverse programme that combined professional workshops, company and university visits, networking sessions, and cultural activities.

The study visit began in Sf“ntu Gheorghe with an interactive DRWO4.0 workshop, joined by local stakeholders and representatives of partner projects DECORATOR and PLAN C. Discussions focused on practical approaches to sustainability, circularity, and the adoption of Industry 4.0 solutions in the regional wood sector—highlighting shared challenges and concrete collaboration opportunities.

Participants met innovative SMEs within the PRO WOOD cluster, gaining first-hand insight into how local companies are addressing resource efficiency, digitalization, and market positioning. The group also visited the Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania and the Transilvania University of Brașov (Department of Furniture & Design / Mechanical Workshop), where academic teams showcased research projects and design-engineering solutions that connect education with real industry needs.

A strong emphasis was placed on community building and partnerships. Networking moments enabled entrepreneurs, cluster members, and academic partners to exchange ideas and identify next steps for joint initiatives across borders. As project (grant) coordinator, my role focused on facilitating cooperation and strengthening synergies among participating organisations and partner projects, ensuring that emerging ideas can translate into tangible follow-up actions within the Danube Region Programme.

Beyond the professional programme, participants explored the cultural and urban context of the region through a guided city tour in Sf“ntu Gheorghe and a visit to Brașov. These activities provided valuable local context and helped foster a shared sense of purpose among the group.

The Transylvania Study Visit underscored the value of cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange in driving innovation and sustainability within the wood and design sectors. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the event advanced the DRWO4.0 objectives and supported the transition of the regional wood industry towards a more digital, sustainable, and competitive.
