ESINERGY Pilot Action in Germany
The German energy market is highly regulated, ensuring fair competition through various market roles like grid operators, metering providers, and energy suppliers. Local, municipally-controlled energy suppliers play a key role. While energy communities exist mainly as investment groups for generation plants, they do not yet fully comply with EU directives.
However, collective self-consumption, such as tenant electricity, is allowed. Currently, consumers (e.g., charging infrastructure) are not remotely controllable or integrated into grid management, posing technical and cost challenges for future grid expansion. Improving flexibility in generation and storage is crucial, requiring environmental data (e.g., snow depth) for better forecasting.
The pilot action will focus on:
- Remote control of grids and assets
- Meteorological station with backup power and data connectivity
- Local hardware for demand-side management
