Pilot Action is WEIZ contributes to Peak Load Reduction

The Austrian pilot in Weiz demonstrated that the integration of photovoltaic generation and storage, combined with a comprehensive energy management and monitoring system, can significantly reduce peak loads and improve energy autonomy. The pilot achieved a peak load reduction of approximately 30% in August, equivalent to 7.29 kW, while the average reduction potential across the year is estimated at 15%.

In addition, the pilot reached an autarky rate of about 32% on average over one year, meaning nearly one-third of the total electricity demand of the Innovation Centre W.E.I.Z. could be met directly on-site. Nevertheless, around 70% of the energy demand still has to be supplied by the grid, highlighting both the achievements and the remaining dependency.

These outcomes illustrate the technical feasibility and positive effects of combining PV, storage, and intelligent energy management systems. They provide a solid basis for further optimization, scaling of the model, and future-oriented strategies to strengthen grid integration and reduce external electricity demand in Austria’s energy transition.
