Ukrainian pilot: Redefining energy resilience through clean heating

Did you know? The Ukrainian pilot is redefining energy resilience through clean heating!

Within the ESINERGY project, the Ukrainian pilot demonstrates how switching from gas to renewable-powered heat pumps can dramatically reduce emissions, cut gas dependency, and strengthen energy security — especially for critical infrastructure.

1. Energy switch
A conventional gas boiler was replaced with a heat pump powered 100% by on-site solar PV, proving that clean heating is not only possible — but reliable.

2. Gas savings
The pilot eliminated 30,000 m³ of natural gas per year, equivalent to 25,000 kWh of thermal energy, directly reducing dependence on imported fuels.

3. Heat pump efficiency
With a COP of 1:3, the system requires only 95,000 kWh/year of electricity to deliver the same heating output — showcasing high efficiency even in demanding conditions.

4. CO₂ reduction
By avoiding gas use, the pilot prevents approximately 53 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, contributing directly to climate goals and cleaner air.

5. What does this enable?
• Energy independence for critical infrastructure
• Gas savings equal to heating 20 average homes per year
• CO₂ reduction comparable to removing 27 petrol cars annually
• If scaled to all 562 hospitals, this approach could save 16.8 million m³ of gas every year.

The Ukrainian pilot proves that renewable heating is a cornerstone of resilience — not only a climate solution, but a strategic energy choice in times of uncertainty.

Clean heat. Stronger systems. A safer energy future.
