The course “Identification of Ecological Corridors and Their Understanding” held in Montenegro
On November 17th, the first course titled “Identification of Ecological Corridors and Their Understanding” was held at the Science and Technology Park in Podgorica, bringing together a team of naturalists, planners, and forest managers working to improve the connectivity of forest ecosystems in Montenegro.
Through practical examples and field experience, participants deepened their understanding of what ecological corridors represent in the field and why they are crucial for the preservation of wildlife species. It was emphasized that corridors are not merely lines on spatial plans, but real routes used by bears, wolves, and lynxes as they move between mountains, forests, and river valleys, maintaining the functionality and vitality of natural systems.
Special attention was given to the challenges of landscape fragmentation and the importance of preserving forest connectivity. Participants discussed how even the smallest disruptions to natural linkages can affect animal movement, as well as how small investments can have a major impact on ecosystem preservation.
The working atmosphere was filled with strong enthusiasm from experts who recognize the value of shared learning and cross-sector cooperation. The course was organized by the Center for the Birds Protection and Study (CZIP) and the National Parks of Montenegro within the ForestConnect project and represents the first module in a program aimed at establishing a network of connected forests in Montenegro.
This event marks an important step toward the long-term protection of natural corridors, safeguarding space and the future for wildlife species, as well as for the communities that share this space with them.
