Hands-on workshop on analytical methods for monitoring PFAS

On 11 and 12 June 2025, 32 experts from laboratories across the Danube region attended a workshop organised and hosted by the Water Research Institute in Bratislava.

Participants were provided with practical support and a broad knowledge base to accelerate the implementation of analytical methods for analysing PFAS at very low concentrations in water and biota, as these are the main matrices for assessing the chemical status of surface water bodies.

Presentations and discussion sessions aimed at exchanging know-how, experiences, and lessons learned across different institutions were complemented by practical demonstrations.

The workshop culminated in a ‘World Café’ facilitated discussion session, which explored the reasons for the current delays in implementing monitoring and analytical methods in the Danube region, and identified promising ways forward to support laboratories in accelerating this much-needed progress.
