HeriCraftMarket: Connecting Heritage Crafts, Tourism and Communities Across the Danube Region

Traditional crafts are more than a reminder of the past. They represent local identity, knowledge passed through generations, creativity and the potential for sustainable regional development. Across the Danube Region, many communities continue to preserve valuable craft traditions, yet these crafts often struggle with limited visibility, changing markets and declining interest among younger generations. The COMMHERITOUR project addresses these challenges by supporting the sustainable valorisation of cultural heritage crafts through tourism, innovation and community cooperation.

One of the project’s key outputs is the HeriCraftMarket platform: a transnational online space designed to showcase heritage crafts, connect stakeholders and promote craft-related tourism experiences across the Danube Region. Developed within the project, the platform serves as a digital meeting point for artisans, cultural organisations, tourism actors, local authorities and communities interested in preserving and promoting living craft traditions.

The platform presents a wide range of heritage crafts and craft-based initiatives from participating countries. Visitors can explore traditional craftsmanship in areas such as textile production, woodwork, pottery, metalwork and many other forms of artisan production. In addition to showcasing crafts and products, HeriCraftMarket also highlights workshops, festivals, exhibitions, museums, creative hubs and tourism experiences connected to local heritage. By linking crafts with tourism, the platform supports authentic visitor experiences while helping local communities strengthen their economic and cultural resilience.

HeriCraftMarket is not only a presentation platform but also a tool for networking, inspiration and knowledge sharing. It includes examples of good practices, training materials and project experiences demonstrating how heritage crafts can contribute to community building, sustainable tourism and regional development. The platform reflects COMMHERITOUR’s ecosystem-based approach, which sees crafts not as isolated activities, but as part of a broader network involving local communities, tourism providers, cultural institutions, designers, entrepreneurs and public authorities.

The creation of HeriCraftMarket builds upon the collaborative work of project partners and stakeholders from across the Danube Region. Through pilot actions, workshops, study visits and stakeholder engagement activities, the project has collected valuable experiences and examples of how traditional crafts can be revitalised and adapted to contemporary audiences and markets. The platform brings these experiences together into one shared digital space accessible to both professionals and the wider public.

As the COMMHERITOUR project approaches its final phase, HeriCraftMarket represents an important step towards ensuring the long-term visibility and sustainability of heritage crafts in the Danube Region. By combining tradition, creativity, tourism and community cooperation, the platform helps demonstrate that cultural heritage crafts are not only part of history, but also an important resource for the future.
