Pilot event in Sibiu, Romania

Wool Dyeing Workshop at ASTRA Museum – Reviving the Colours of Tradition in Sibiu, Romania

The Wool Dyeing Workshop at the ASTRA Museum in Sibiu came alive with vibrant colours and a strong sense of community during the recent event. This workshop is part of the pilot initiative “Wool – A Fiber to Build Communities,” implemented by the Sibiu County Council within the Danube Region Programme. Participants included local craftspeople, ethnographers, wool producers, and young creatives who collaborated to explore traditional techniques of natural dyeing. Using plants and natural resources, they transformed raw fleece, yarn, and fabric into unique materials with various textures and shades, highlighting both ancestral knowledge and sustainable practices.

The workshop focused on the transfer of knowledge between generations, encouraging artisans and designers to reinterpret traditional techniques for modern applications. By merging creativity with heritage, the COMMHERITOUR pilot project in Sibiu enhances community cohesion around wool crafts and showcases the potential of cultural heritage to drive sustainable economic development and tourism. This initiative is part of a broader project aimed at developing community-based models for the sustainable valorisation of cultural heritage crafts, with the goal of improving the economic and tourism performance of remote areas in the Danube Region. It is financed through the Interreg Danube Region Programme, with additional support from the Romanian state budget and Sibiu County Council.
