Drought in the Danube Basin: Simulation Analysis of the 2026 Extreme Event
A new simulation analysis, prepared by IIASA within the Danube Water Balance project, examines the 2026 drought across the Danube basin currently until the end of July, using ERA5-Land data and the CWatM hydrological model. It shows how unusually high temperatures and low precipitation developed into severe soil moisture deficits and exceptionally low river flows, highlighting the growing impacts on water resources, agriculture, energy, navigation and ecosystems.
