National Co-Creation – Stakeholder Workshop at the Bechet-Corabia Case Study in Romania

A recent stakeholder workshop in Craiova, Romania, addressed sediment management challenges in the Bechet-Corabia area along the Danube River. Organized as part of the Danube Sediment_Q2 project, the workshop brought together experts and officials to explore strategies for sediment monitoring and management to counter erosion, pollution, and sedimentation issues that affect water quality and local ecosystems.

The event featured key presentations by representatives from the National Administration Romanian Waters (NARW) and Jiu Water Basin Administration (WBA). Topics included project objectives, sediment risk assessments, and monitoring techniques. Ongoing issues in the Jiu-Danube basin, such as erosion, reservoir clogging, and pollution from agricultural and historical mining sources, were highlighted. Stakeholders also reviewed tools for managing sediment, with an emphasis on improving monitoring for pollutants like mercury in local fish populations.

The second day involved field visits to critical sites, starting at the Zaval monitoring station on the Jiu River near its confluence with the Danube. Here, stakeholders observed the area’s low slopes, wide floodplain, sandy riverbanks, and islands, which create habitats for diverse flora and fauna. Next, at Bechet Port on the Danube, participants inspected a sediment trap set up to collect suspended sediments, helping assess sediment quality in light of fluctuating water levels.

Further stops included the Canal 0 irrigation channel's confluence with the Danube, where sedimentation issues disrupt water flow, and Corabia Port, a vital yet deteriorated infrastructure hub. Efforts to modernize the port aim to boost commerce and tourism, but sediment buildup in docking areas hampers navigation. The last stop was at Izlaz, where the Olt River meets the Danube, forming sandy banks and low-flow areas that serve as recreation spots and bird habitats.

The field trip emphasized the impact of sediment accumulation on navigation and infrastructure, especially at Corabia. Insights gained will help guide targeted sediment management efforts, supporting regional conservation and economic goals. The workshop fostered a collaborative approach to tackling sediment-related challenges in the Danube ecosystem.
