MicroDrink Project: Advancing Knowledge and Action on Microplastics in Drinking Water

Access to safe and high-quality drinking water is essential for public health and sustainable development. However, emerging contaminants such as microplastics are creating new challenges for water management systems across Europe.

Due to their widespread presence in the environment, complex characteristics, and ability to interact with other pollutants, microplastics have become a growing concern for researchers, water professionals, and policymakers. Understanding their occurrence, behaviour, and potential impacts requires coordinated efforts across scientific disciplines, institutions, and countries.

The MicroDrink project, implemented under the Interreg Danube Region Programme, brings together experts, research institutions, public authorities, and water sector professionals with a shared goal: to improve drinking water safety by strengthening knowledge, harmonising monitoring approaches, and supporting evidence-based decision-making.

Through research activities, pilot actions, and transnational cooperation, MicroDrink has contributed to a better understanding of microplastic contamination in drinking water systems across the Danube Region. The project supports the development of common approaches and provides valuable knowledge for future strategies aimed at reducing environmental pressures and protecting water resources.

The MicroDrink video highlights the achievements of the project partnership, presenting the harmonised monitoring approach, collected data, and key insights gained through joint efforts. Beyond scientific results, it demonstrates the importance of cooperation in addressing complex environmental challenges that require shared solutions.

Watch the video and discover how collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange can contribute to safer and more sustainable drinking water management.
