New video guidelines to strengthen microplastics monitoring in drinking water resources

The MicroDrink project has released comprehensive video guidelines designed to support water facility operators and other key stakeholders in microplastics sampling and monitoring. Rooted in the project's overarching mission to enhance capacity building and governance for the management and prevention of microplastic pollution in drinking water resources across the Danube River Basin, the guidelines represent a significant step forward in translating scientific knowledge into practical, field-ready tools.

At its core, MicroDrink seeks to strengthen the knowledge of policy- and decision-makers on microplastic sampling and analysis, in alignment with the EU Drinking Water Directive 2020/2184 and Commission Delegated Decision C(2024)1459, which establishes requirements for microplastics sampling, laboratory analysis and data reporting. To support this goal, the video guidelines synthesise the project's harmonized monitoring efforts, findings from nine pilot sites, and the lessons learned throughout the process.

The guidelines walk viewers through the essentials of microplastics monitoring by addressing foundational questions like what microplastics are and why their presence in drinking water warrants systematic monitoring, before moving into the practical aspects of fieldwork. Viewers are guided through the sampling setup and its key requirements, alongside targeted recommendations for contamination prevention, a critical consideration when working with ubiquitous microplastics particles at a small scale.

A central feature of the guidelines is the showcase of the harmonised sampling approach developed and applied across MicroDrink pilot sites, offering a replicable methodology that can be adopted by water utilities and monitoring bodies region-wide. The guidelines further cover best practices for sample handling and transport, ensuring the integrity of collected samples from the field to the laboratory. Finally, the guidelines candidly address the real-world challenges encountered during pilot monitoring, providing future practitioners with an honest and valuable account of what to anticipate in the field.
