Exploring the ROMAN LEGACY
Discover the Roman Danube Limes and its hinterland through a new Cultural Route embedded in a broader Theme Region. ROMAN LEGACY uncovers shared heritage, connects communities, and promotes sustainable cultural tourism across the Danube Region.
Shaping a Living Roman Heritage Network Across the Danube
Project Objective
ROMAN LEGACY aims to create a cross-border Cultural Route along the Roman Danube Limes and its hinterland, embedded in a broader Theme Region. By building a strong transnational network and developing innovative tools and strategies for the sustainable presentation and promotion of Roman heritage in the Danube Region, the project lays the foundations for a vibrant, engaging Cultural Route and prepares it for certification by the Council of Europe.
Creating a Shared Roman Narrative Along the Danube
Relevance & Context
The Danube Region holds exceptional Roman heritage – from UNESCO World Heritage sites to lesser-known local sites, museums and cultural landscapes. Yet its presentation is still uneven, fragmented or disconnected across borders: many areas remain under‑visited while others face pressure from over‑tourism. What is missing is a unifying transnational brand.
ROMAN LEGACY addresses this by building strong networks, improving access to knowledge, involving local communities, and fostering slow, eco-friendly tourism that benefits remote areas and enhances regional cohesion along the Danube Limes and its hinterland.
From Knowledge to Experience: Stories and Tools That Bring the Roman Past to Life

Make the Roman Past a Living, Connected Experience
Main Activities
ROMAN LEGACY builds a strong transnational network, gathers and analyses heritage data, and develops shared storytelling principles through expert meetings, workshops and co-creation processes. The partnership collaborates with digital specialists to design VR/AR tools, test Roman Trails and implement pilot actions that engage local communities. At the same time, ROMAN LEGACY prepares governance structures, visibility measures and all components needed for the long-term development of the Cultural Route.
Together, these efforts help transform the Roman past into a living, connected experience for visitors and communities across the Danube Region.
