Symphony on the Frontier of the Empire

On Saturday, 16 May, the concert Symphony on the Frontier of the Empire was held in Osijek as part of the celebration marking the arrival of the reconstructed Roman vessel Danuvina Alacris, originally built within the Living Danube Limes project. The ship is the result of a long-term international experimental archaeology project dedicated to reconstructing and understanding Roman river navigation and military logistics along the Danube frontier.

The concert was performed by SO DO – System of Orchestras for Children and Youth, El Sistema Croatia, whose young musicians brought together music, history, and heritage in a unique open-air event. Set within the historic surroundings of Osijek’s Tvrđa, the programme symbolically connected the contemporary city with its Roman past, reviving the spirit of the ancient frontier through music.

The event was organised with the support of the Roman Legacy project, the Archaeological Museum Osijek, the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb, and the Institute of Archaeology. Through the collaboration of cultural and scientific institutions, the programme highlighted the importance of presenting archaeological heritage to the wider public in innovative and accessible ways.
