Gastrozbor on Zlatibor: a celebration of local flavors and community
In collaboration with the Tourist Organization of Zlatibor, the SReST Project hosted the gastronomic event “GastroZbor” at Kraljev Trg (King’s Square) in Zlatibor, Serbia, bringing together local flavors, culinary traditions, and a strong sense of community, with a particular focus on supporting youth and elderly in depopulated areas of Western Serbia.
A Taste of Authentic Local Ingredients
Visitors enjoyed creative bites prepared by some of Zlatibor’s most renowned restaurants and hotels. The menu highlighted ingredients with protected geographical indications, featuring Ivanjica potatoes, Zlatar buckwheat and spelt, Sjenica dried meat, Arilje raspberries, as well as artisanal dairy, cured meats, wild berries, and mushrooms.
The event also included an exhibition of local specialties and craft distillery presentations, offering a unique culinary experience that captured the authentic spirit of Zlatibor.
The evening program introduced guests to the world of medicinal herbs, including a live preparation of authentic Zlatibor tea, bringing local culture and tradition to life.
A Humanitarian Purpose
Beyond its culinary delights, “GastroZbor” carried a strong humanitarian mission. All proceeds collected from the tastings were donated to the Special Hospital “Čigota”, a renowned health and wellness institution in Zlatibor known for its expertise in endocrinology, rehabilitation, and preventive care. The funds were directed specifically to the “Čigotica” department, a children’s health facility within the hospital, which recently suffered severe damage in a fire.
This initiative demonstrated the power of community solidarity: local chefs, producers, and visitors joined forces to support the hospital’s recovery efforts. By turning a culinary celebration into a charitable cause, “GastroZbor” not only highlighted Zlatibor’s gastronomic and cultural treasures but also underscored the region’s spirit of compassion and resilience.
When Gastronomy Meets Culture and Responsibility
“GastroZbor” was more than just a culinary event; it is a testament to the transformative power of food as a bridge between cultures, history, and people. By showcasing authentic regional ingredients, traditional preparation techniques, and the stories behind each dish, the event gave visitors a deeper appreciation of Zlatibor’s cultural identity and agricultural heritage.
As part of the SReST project (Socially Responsible Slow Food Tourism in the Danube Region), “GastroZbor” emphasized sustainability and community involvement at every step. Local farmers, artisanal producers, chefs, and cultural organizations were not only participants but also co-creators, ensuring that the event authentically reflected the spirit of the region.
This thoughtful approach demonstrates how gastronomy can serve as a platform for social responsibility. By integrating local economic development, environmental awareness, and humanitarian initiatives, “GastroZbor” offered visitors more than a culinary journey—it created a meaningful cultural experience that supports local communities, preserves traditions, and inspires conscious tourism.
