Action Day in Austria: Pinkafeld Showcases Sustainable Mobility within the Active2PublicTransport Project

How can everyday travel become greener, healthier, and more connected? That’s the question behind the Active2PublicTransport (A2PT) project – and on 18 September 2025, the town of Pinkafeld became a hub of inspiration during the Action Day event.

The evening brought together citizens, local stakeholders, and mobility enthusiasts to explore how active and public transport can complement each other and reduce car dependency across the Danube Region. Supported by the EU’s Interreg Danube programme, the project is testing practical solutions through three pilot initiatives in Burgenland.

Free Bicycle Transport on Bus Line B2

Since 21 June 2025, passengers on selected VBB (Verkehrsbetriebe Burgenland) bus services between Graz – Bad Tatzmannsdorf – Oberwart have been able to take their bicycles on board for free.

This simple yet effective measure makes it easier to combine cycling and bus travel — especially for commuters and leisure cyclists. The promotion, running until 31 October 2025, is part of the A2PT initiative and can be used with a free reservation at least 24 hours in advance via the VBB hotline.

Test Campaign: Living Without a Car for a Month

What happens when you leave your car keys behind for four weeks?
In spring 2025, ten test participants from Burgenland found out. As part of a special A2PT test campaign, they switched entirely to public transport and active mobility.

Each participant received an e-bike, a folding bike, and a free public transport ticket, helping them experience a new, multimodal way of getting around. The campaign ran through April, May, and June 2025, demonstrating that combining buses, trains, and bicycles can work seamlessly in everyday life.

Temporary Street Design in Neufeld/Leitha

Looking ahead, A2PT will bring innovation to the streets of Neufeld/Leitha. In spring 2026, a temporary redesign will transform parts of the town to make walking and cycling safer and more attractive.

The plan includes colourful road markings, planting troughs, and a reduction of selected parking spaces — all without permanent construction work. With its low-cost and flexible approach, this pilot will serve as an inspiring model for other municipalities aiming to promote sustainable urban mobility.

Acknowledging Pinkafeld’s Contribution

The organisers of the Action Day in Pinkafeld expressed their gratitude to all participants for their engagement and ideas. Their involvement plays a key role in advancing sustainable mobility initiatives and promoting a climate-friendly future throughout the Danube region.
