Building the Future of Sustainable Mobility in the Olomouc Region
The Olomouc Region is taking an important step towards a greener and more accessible future. As part of the Active2Public Transport (A2PT) project under the Danube Region Programme, regional partners are now shaping a Regional Action Plan – a strategic framework that will guide the transformation of transport systems toward climate-friendly, inclusive, and efficient mobility.
This process brings together municipalities, transport planners, and local stakeholders to rethink how people move across the region. The goal is to go beyond city borders and create a sustainable mobility plan for the entire functional area of the Olomouc agglomeration – one that reflects real travel patterns, daily commuting flows, and the interconnectedness of urban and rural areas.

The plan builds on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) concept and its identified urban nodes, including Olomouc – one of ten such nodes in the Czech Republic. By integrating the regional approach into the wider European framework, the Olomouc agglomeration is aligning itself with future requirements for accessing Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) funds. These will support key infrastructure and “last-mile” connections ensuring seamless access to the TEN-T corridors.
The A2PT project has already provided valuable pilot experiences and data that will feed directly into the action plan. One example is an innovative online cycling map portal of the Olomouc Region (https://olkr.stavbycyklo.cz), offering detailed information on safe cycling routes and their links to public transport. Another initiative has tested cargo bikes and e-folding bikes with residents in towns such as Bystřička, Šternberk, and Uničov – supporting a real shift in everyday mobility habits.

Through these and other actions, the Regional Action Plan will become a cornerstone for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving accessibility for all social groups, and fostering a lasting modal shift toward active and public transport. By linking local initiatives with European objectives, the Olomouc Region demonstrates how cooperation across scales can turn sustainability goals into tangible regional progress.
To support this process, a regional workshop took place on 26 September 2025 in Velká Bystřice, bringing together representatives of municipalities, transport experts, and regional stakeholders. The event provided valuable input for the preparation of the Regional Action Plan and further strengthened cooperation towards sustainable mobility across the Olomouc Region.
