Hiking Tourism in the Danube Region: Needs and Opportunities for Sustainable Travel

The Active2Public Transport report explores how hiking tourism in the Danube Region can be better connected with sustainable mobility options like public transport.

While interest in hiking has significantly increased—especially since the COVID-19 pandemic—most tourists still rely on cars. The report identifies key challenges, including poor transport links, complex trip planning, and lack of infrastructure at trailheads. Encouragingly, awareness is growing among both hikers and tourism organizations. The report highlights good practice examples and recommends improving digital trip planning tools, expanding transport services, introducing standardized trail certifications, and enhancing cross-regional knowledge sharing. Sustainable travel must become more convenient, affordable, and attractive to reduce car dependency.
