Project meeting and field visits in Slovenia

In the thermophilous downy oak forest

Between 4th and 6th May 2026, project meetings and field visits were organised in Slovenia within the CLIMANATRES project in cooperation with Biological Institute ZRZ SAZU (PP3) and Slovenia Forest Service (PP4) and HUN-REN Centre for Ecological research (LP). Activities took place in the areas near Ljubljana including Šmarna Gora and the Kras region.

The meetings and field activities focused on vegetation mapping methods, verification of existing vegetation cover datasets and comparison of the actual vegetation conditions in the field with existing cartographic data. During the field visit to Šmarna Gora, participants reviewed several forest sections and identified characteristic plant species occurring in the area. The activities also included discussions on vegetation interpretation and the application of mapping methodologies in practice.

In the Kras region, field activities focused on different vegetation and habitat types, including grasslands, pastures and forest stands. Special attention was dedicated to the comparison of vegetation classifications with the actual field conditions, as well as to discussing regarding the suitability of habitat type classifications and cartographic representations.

The activities concluded with a joint project meeting focused on the review of field observations and analyses of the visited areas. Project partners discussed the obtained results, exchanged experiences from the fieldwork and coordinated the next project activities related to vegetation mapping and habitat assessment.
