Looking Back on the DanubeSediment_Q2 Partner Meeting and Stakeholder Workshop in Bucharest
In November 2025, the DanubeSediment_Q2 consortium gathered in Bucharest for an intensive and highly productive partner meeting and stakeholder workshop hosted by Apele Rom“ne at the historic Hotel Capitol. As the project gradually enters its final phase, the event marked an important milestone in aligning ongoing activities, consolidating results, and preparing the foundation for the project’s final outputs.
Aligning Efforts Toward the Final Phase
The first day of the partner meeting focused on coordination and planning. Partners worked closely together to align timelines, review progress across work packages, and ensure a smooth pathway toward the remaining project milestones. With several key deliverables approaching completion, the discussions helped clarify priorities and strengthen collaboration across the consortium.
In the afternoon, participants had the opportunity to step outside the meeting room and explore the remarkable Văcărești Nature Park, often referred to as the “Bucharest Delta.” Surrounded by wetlands, reed beds, and Lake Văcărești, the group joined a guided birdwatching tour led by a local biologist. The visit offered not only a chance to experience Bucharest’s unique urban biodiversity, but also a reminder of the ecological value of healthy river and wetland systems — a central theme of the DanubeSediment_Q2 project. The day concluded with a memorable sunset over the wetlands, providing inspiration and renewed energy for the work ahead.
Technical Progress and Collaborative Exchange
Day two centered on technical discussions and the consolidation of project outputs. One of the highlights was the presentation by subcontractors from GeoEcoMar Romania, who introduced their proposed methodology for Sediment Risk Assessment. The methodology represents an important building block for supporting informed sediment management decisions across the Danube Basin.
Partners also made significant progress in discussing the nearly finalized HYMO method, an innovative approach co-created by blattfisch e.U., the ICPDR, and the DanubeSediment_Q2 team. The HYMO method aims to establish a common methodology for assessing the hydromorphological status of selected river reaches along the Danube and its tributaries, contributing to a more harmonized and integrated understanding of river processes across the basin.
The sessions were characterized by intensive exchange, collaborative problem-solving, and constructive discussions on how to bring the remaining tasks to completion.
Engaging Stakeholders Across the Danube Basin
The final day featured the stakeholder workshop “Modeling and Assessment in our Pilot Regions – First Results,” which brought together around 70 participants from ministries, infrastructure providers, research institutions, NGOs, and other relevant organisations — both onsite and online.
During the workshop, the consortium presented sediment management measures identified for the project’s pilot regions. These measures had been evaluated using the project’s Multi-Criteria Assessment Tool, allowing for an objective comparison and selection process before implementation within the numerical sediment transport models. Participants were also introduced to the first modelling results and the projected effects of the proposed measures.
The workshop sparked lively and insightful discussions on key challenges related to integrated sediment management in the Danube Basin, including future sediment loads, navigation-related bank erosion, and long-term river management strategies. The active engagement and expertise shared by stakeholders provided valuable feedback that will help guide the project’s next steps and support the development of the final Integrated Sediment Management Plan.
As DanubeSediment_Q2 moves closer to its conclusion, the Bucharest meeting highlighted the strength of international cooperation and the importance of continuous dialogue between science, policy, and practice in shaping sustainable sediment management solutions for the Danube region.
