Sturgeon Monitoring

This December, our colleagues from the Institute for Multidisciplinary Research - University of Belgrade, together with Jakob Neuburg from BOKU University in Vienna carried out important monitoring actions for the project.

Telemetry equipment was installed at two key locations on the Danube - near Bogojevo and Ljubičevac - to help track the movements of sterlet, one of the Danube’s endangered sturgeon species.
The underwater receivers are marked with white buoys, making them visible and identifiable on the river.

At the Bogojevo site, the team successfully implanted transmitters in 11 sterlets, which were safely released back into the river after recovering.

Why this matters:
By following the movements and behavior of sterlet, researchers gain crucial insights into migration routes, habitat use, and threats. This data will contribute to building the first joint transboundary sturgeon monitoring system in the Danube River Basin - a key step toward improving protection measures for these critically endangered species.

Stay tuned for more field updates from our partners across the Danube!
