Mapping Potential Sturgeon Spawning Habitats in the Bulgarian Danube

WWF-Bulgaria, project partners, carried out a field survey on the Bulgarian stretch of the Danube River.

Using side-scan sonar technology, the team mapped a pre-selected river section to identify potential spawning habitats for sturgeon species - a key step in improving our understanding of these critically endangered migratory fish. During the survey, valuable data on riverbed characteristics were collected and will now be processed and integrated into the joint transnational sturgeon monitoring system developed within the project.

Strengthening cross-border cooperation and improving data integration are essential for effective sturgeon conservation across the Danube Basin.
