World Fish Migration Day

On this year’s World Fish Migration Day, MonStur in the Danube was presented by our partners from WWF at the World Fish Migration Day International Conference in Galați.

The event was organized under the umbrella of the LIFEBoat4Sturgeons project, together with partners from the Institute of Research and Development for Aquatic Ecology, Fishing and Aquaculture (ICDEAPA) and the Natural Sciences Museum Complex “Răsvan Angheluță” Galați, Romania.

It was an opportunity to acknowledge the incredible fish species that connect ecosystems and countries through their migrations - and a reminder of why protecting free-flowing rivers and healthy habitats matters more than ever.

In the Danube River Basin, sturgeons are among the most iconic migratory fish species. For centuries, 6 species travelled thousands of kilometers between the Danube and the Black Sea. Today, only 4 still survive in the wild — all threatened with extinction.

Through the MonStur in the Danube project, partners from across the region are working together to establish a joint monitoring system and strengthen international cooperation for sturgeon conservation.

Because protecting migratory fish means protecting the rivers they depend on.
