Peer Review visit within the SAFETY4TMF project: Improving TMF safety and monitoring

🌍 20 experts from 11 institutions across 6 countries took part in the #PeerReview visit organized at the mining site operated by CUPRU MIN S.A. Abrud, the Valea Șesii Tailings Management Facility in Romania.

The visit focused on presenting the pilot activities carried out within our project to improve TMF safety through advanced risk modelling and enhanced monitoring practices.

📡 🚁 One of the highlights of the visit was a live demonstration of LiDAR technology operated by drone, showcasing the power of high-precision 3D mapping for monitoring tailings management facilities (TMFs):

📍 LiDAR delivers precise topographic data, enables fast terrain profiling, and helps detect early signs of slope instability — a crucial step toward safer TMF management.

📍 Drones further enhance this process by providing quick access to hard-to-reach areas and supporting a wide range of analytical applications, depending on the sensors they carry.

ℹ The LiDAR equipment was purchased through the Interreg Danube Region Programme [MM2] within the SAFETY4TMF project, and will continue to support future applications in environmental science and engineering.
