A green future on the roof - Company site visit and workshop at Terrán
During the factory visit organised as part of the SMEnergy project, participants had the opportunity to learn about the Pécs and Bóly factory sites of Terrán Roof Tile Manufacturer Ltd., a 100% Hungarian-owned family business. It exemplifies how traditional industry expertise can be combined with a commitment to sustainability.
The visit was particularly inspiring, as it highlighted that both the company's management and employees share a long-term, environmentally conscious outlook. The Terrán GoGreen programme and the development of the Generon solar roof tile are excellent examples of how a traditional construction product can be reimagined through the integration of renewable energy sources.
As part of the event, a roundtable discussion titled “Green Future on the Roof” was held, where experts shared their experiences on integrating renewable energy into construction manufacturing processes and making these innovations accessible to SMEs.
The relevance of the event is underscored by the fact that buildings are responsible for 60% of global energy consumption, with 20% related to construction and 40% to operation. Furthermore, buildings account for 38% of global harmful emissions, with 10% coming from manufacturing and 28% from operation. These figures highlight the urgency and complexity of the challenge — a solution to which can only be achieved through broad collaboration, knowledge sharing, and collective thinking.
The goal of the SMEnergy project is to build a bridge between energy-intensive SMEs and green technologies, along with the necessary knowledge and consultancy services. During the Terrán factory visit, we saw first-hand how this can be implemented — not only through technological innovation but also through the coordinated development of corporate culture and employee mindsets.
This event reinforced the idea that, even in a sector traditionally associated with a large environmental footprint, there is both room and demand for change. The ability to adapt quickly, be open to innovation, and engage in shared learning could be essential in ensuring that the industry not only reduces its negative impact but also contributes positively to the environment.
