Key Bulgarian Stakeholders Endorse SMEnergy National Action Plan

The SMEnergy project has reached an important milestone in Bulgaria with the successful development and validation of its National Action Plan (NAP), designed to support the long-term implementation and sustainability of the SMEnergy model in the country.

During the final phase of the project, the Bulgarian Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Agency (BSMEPA) engaged renewable energy experts and key stakeholders in a series of consultations to ensure that the Action Plan reflects the needs and priorities of Bulgarian SMEs as they navigate the energy transition.

The National Action Plan outlines a comprehensive framework for supporting SMEs in their green transition. Its objectives include strengthening competitiveness, improving access to finance, increasing awareness of energy transition opportunities, supporting policy alignment, fostering collaboration between stakeholders, providing digital support services, and ensuring inclusive and sustainable access to resources. The plan also aims to deliver measurable regional impact while creating the conditions for the long-term sustainability of the SMEnergy model.

The Action Plan was presented on 4 June 2026 during a national event organised by the Enterprise Europe Network Bulgaria in Varna. Representatives of business support organisations welcomed the initiative and highlighted the importance of incorporating the priorities of the Clean Industrial Deal to further encourage businesses to invest in sustainable development and alternative energy solutions, ultimately increasing their energy independence.

Stakeholders expressed strong support for the continued implementation of the SMEnergy model in Bulgaria and confirmed that the National Action Plan accurately reflects the current challenges and needs of Bulgarian SMEs.

Further endorsement came from Ruse University and the Renewable Energy Resources Cluster, both of which recognised the value of the SMEnergy model and its network of GEKOS hubs in supporting SMEs through advisory services, Energy Transition Roadmaps, and access to funding opportunities and expert guidance.

To demonstrate their commitment to sustaining and scaling the project's impact, both organisations signed Letters of Intent, reaffirming their support for the continued implementation and long-term sustainability of the GEKOS initiative in Bulgaria.

The strong backing from national stakeholders highlights the relevance of the SMEnergy approach and lays the foundation for continued support of SMEs on their journey towards a greener, more resilient future.
