SpongeCity on FAO80
Balázs Borkovits did represent the University of Pécs, Hungary at the 80th Anniversary Celebration of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Rome Water Dialogue 2025 — remarkable gatherings bringing together global leaders and experts shaping the future of sustainable water management and climate resilience.
He shared that information to our SpongeCity project received FAO Technical Recognition in the category of ’Land, Soil and Water Resource Management’ at the event.
The project tackles one of today’s most pressing urban challenges — the growing risk of flash floods and climate-related disasters. By integrating green and blue infrastructure such as rain gardens, permeable pavements, and retention areas, SpongeCity enables cities to naturally absorb and manage excess rainfall. To support local planning, the project members leverage satellite-based Earth Observation tools - developed by researchers of Paris Lodron University of Salzburg - that help urban planners design and prioritize effective spongecity investments. The project also paves the way for these interventions by water balance measurements, feasibility studies, pilot investments and trainings.
We would like to thank Balázs for representing the project at the event.
