SpongeCity Project Successfully Introduced at the Water Resilience Forum in Brussels
The SpongeCity project was successfully introduced at the Water Resilience Forum, held on 8 December in Brussels, marking an important milestone in the project’s international visibility and policy engagement.
The Forum, organised by the European Commission in cooperation with key EU institutions, brought together policymakers, regional and local authorities, researchers, and water-sector stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening Europe’s water resilience in the face of climate change. Within this high-level setting, SpongeCity was showcased as a practical, research-driven nature-based solution addressing urban water challenges.
Representatives of the project presented SpongeCity at the Water Resilience Solutions Pavilion, highlighting its integrated approach to urban water retention, climate adaptation, and sustainable land use. The presentation demonstrated how SpongeCity supports cities and regions in managing extreme weather events such as floods and droughts, while enhancing environmental quality and urban livability.
The project’s participation attracted interest from EU policymakers, regional authorities, and technical experts, reinforcing SpongeCity’s relevance to ongoing discussions on the EU Water Resilience Strategy and local implementation needs. The Forum provided valuable opportunities for knowledge exchange, networking, and exploring future cooperation with public authorities and international partners.
By successfully contributing to the Water Resilience Forum, the SpongeCity project confirmed its role as a scalable and policy-relevant solution for strengthening water resilience across European cities and regions.
