Shaping the Future of Energy Storage in Germany - StoreMore Workshop in Fuchstal
On 23 April 2026, BET Consulting GmbH organized an online stakeholder workshop for the municipality of Fuchstal as part of the EU-funded Store More project. The event brought together 21 participants from across the energy storage value chain, including distribution system operators, research institutes, battery energy storage system (BESS) developers, investors, legal experts, municipal representatives, and energy consultants.

The workshop aimed to create a shared practical understanding of how energy storage systems, particularly BESS technologies, can be better integrated into the German electricity grid. Discussions focused on investment needs, regulatory barriers, financing conditions, and policy measures required to accelerate the deployment of sustainable energy storage solutions.
Participants highlighted the growing importance of BESS for Germany's energy transition, especially in supporting the integration of variable renewable energy sources. While Germany currently operates around 3 GW of grid-scale battery storage, experts emphasized that future demand could increase to 40–90 GW by 2045. The workshop also underlined the strategic importance of strengthening European battery manufacturing capacities and reducing dependence on non-European supply chains.
Key challenges identified during the discussions included grid connection bottlenecks, regulatory uncertainty, insufficient digitalization of network operator processes, and unclear future grid-fee frameworks. Stakeholders agreed that long-term investment security and a stable regulatory environment are essential for further market growth.
As a result of the workshop, several policy recommendations were formulated, including accelerating the digitalization and standardization of grid operator processes, creating transparent and predictable regulatory rules, supporting European innovation and manufacturing in storage technologies, and improving incentives for grid-friendly BESS operation.
The workshop concluded that Germany's energy storage market has strong momentum and significant growth potential, but continued expansion will depend on balancing grid security requirements with investment certainty.
